The Histopathology department comprises a consultant-led team providing a comprehensive tissue-based diagnostic service. We provide a diagnostic referral service for paediatric histopathology and neuropathology for centres both in the UK and abroad
The service includes
Paediatric pathology
Neuropathology
Muscle pathology
Metabolic disease
Autopsy
Our scientific team offer a range of specialist investigations including
Immunohistochemistry
Electron microscopy
The department is the UK Centre for Hermansky Pudlak Syndrome
The department supports a wide range of research projects that involve histology, immunohistochemistry and molecular studies of pathological tissue. For additional information please see our main research section
Our Haematology Laboratory provides a wide range of routine screening tests with a special interest in the diagnosis and monitoring of haematological malignancies and coagulation disorders
Our skilled laboratory staff are linked to the wider Haematology clinical team within Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), ensuring that our analysis and diagnosis is supported by expert clinical advice. All techniques and laboratory equipment are designed to give the maximum information on minimal amounts of blood. The department is divided into four sections covering blood transfusion, automated and specialised haematology, coagulation /haemophilia service and bone marrow investigations and manipulations
The routine Haematology and Coagulation service is provided from within the Blood Sciences Laboratory
In addition to the provision of a laboratory service to the hospital, the department provides specialised investigations to a number of other NHS trusts and private laboratories within the UK
The Genetics Laboratories provide an extensive range of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics diagnostic testing services and have full clinical pathology accreditation (CPA). Together with the Clinical Genetics Department the laboratories comprise the North East Thames Regional Genetics Service
Comprehensive constitutional chromosome analysis is offered for a range of referrals (postnatal and prenatal) using high density oligonucleotide microarrays, G-banding karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Other DNA based cytogenetics tests employed by the laboratories include quantitative fluorescence polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) and multiplex ligation probe amplification MLPA
Diagnostic, carrier and predictive testing is offered for a comprehensive range of single gene disorders as well as a DNA banking service whereby samples can be forwarded to external laboratories for approved requests providing funding is available
Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis is offered for a number of X-linked disorders and skeletal dysplasias. In addition, the laboratories are nationally commissioned to provide specialised diagnostic services for Bardet-Biedl syndrome, craniosynostoses, lysosomal storage disorders and severe combined immunodeficiencies
The laboratories have a strong commitment to translational research and new service development and collaborate closely with clinical and academic colleagues within Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH), the UCL Institute of Child Health and the UCL Partners academic health science centre
The laboratories are members of the South East of England Genetics Network (SEEGEN) and the United Kingdom Genetic Testing Network UKGTN
The Chemical Pathology Laboratory provides an extensive range of services covering both routine biochemistry and highly specialised analysis and interpretation. The laboratory is led and supported by experts in their discipline and is highly regarded for the clinical opinion which supports interpretation and diagnosis
The service comprises four main laboratories
Routine biochemistry
Metabolic biochemistry
Special enzymes laboratory
Newborn screening
The Chemical Pathology Laboratory hosts and supports several National Specialist Commissioning Group (NSCG) Services including lysosomal storage disorders and muscles glycogen metabolism. We also have strong collaborative links with other highly specialised diagnostics laboratories, such as the Neurometabolic Unit at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
To develop services of the future our unit is highly research active with strong links to the Institute of Child Health. For more information on our research activity please see our main research section
The Clinical Immunology Laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) provides a dedicated paediatric immunology service, supported by an expert scientific and clinical team
We offer a comprehensive range of investigations to assist clinicians caring for those with autoimmune, rheumatological, renal, allergic and gastrointestinal disorders. The laboratory also leads on the manipulation of blood and marrow for transplantation as well as providing specialised testing for primary immune deficiency PID
The laboratory has an active programme of assay development. Current areas of development include innate immunity (including neutrophil function) and apoptosis
The Department of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Control provides a rapid, high-quality investigation and advice service. Our laboratory performs a wide range of routine and specialist investigations in Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology and Virology required for the diagnosis and management of those with infection and infectious disease
Our expert team offers a full infection control service for the prevention, investigation and control of healthcare-associated infection in patients and staff. In addition, we perform environmental monitoring for pharmacy services as well as for infection control purposes (environmental cleanliness, air quality and outbreak investigation
The department is highly research active, specialising in the development of molecular diagnostics both in virology (especially rapid real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to support the transplant services) and bacteriology broad range PCR and sequencing in particular)
The Paediatric Malignancy Unit (PMU) is a unit providing a wide range of molecular genetic and cytogenetic diagnostic tests to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), other NHS trusts in the UK and the private sector. We have established a national service for several rare disorders. We provide a national service for neutropenia and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia
The PMU provides a specialist haematology and oncology service for patients at GOSH as well as for external hospitals. We work closely with staff from the haematology, oncology, histopathology and neuropathology departments at GOSH
All members of staff are Health Professions Council (HPC) registered; with genetic technologists on the voluntary HPC register. We are also a registered genetic technologist training laboratory
We provide personalised research services to academic institutions and the private sector and participate in national and international collaborative research projects. For further information on our research activity please see the main research section
